Leeds Homes
Find out what information you will need when you apply for a council or housing association home.
1. Get the information you need
To join the housing register and bid for a council home you will need:
- National Insurance numbers for you and the joint applicants,
- a mobile phone number and email address,
- the full names and dates of birth of everyone who will be living in the home (including sleep-in support workers),
- 5 years of address history for you and joint applicants,
- proof of ID, address and eligibility for all adults.
To help us assess your application you'll also need to tell us about:
- any children (15 and younger) who stay with you overnight,
- any carers who stay with you overnight,
- any local connections (like family or work) you have to areas or wards of Leeds,
- your current home,
- why you want to move home,
- your current income,
- any property you own,
- any issues or legal action from your previous tenancies,
- any family members who work for Leeds City Council, BITMO or any housing associations that are part of the Leeds Homes Register.
If you do not have an email address or a National Insurance number you will need to visit Leeds Housing Options.
2. Proofs to include
You will need to add documents to your application to prove your:
- identity
- address
- eligibility (if you are not a UK national)
You can scan them or take photos.
Photo ID for all adults (16 and older)
You should upload one piece of photo ID and one proof of address for each adult.
Photo ID includes:
- passport,
- UK photocard driving licence (full or provisional),
- EU national identity card,
- HM Forces ID card,
- Blue Badge.
If you do not have photo ID
If you do not have photo ID you can upload either:
- one piece of other ID and 2 proof of address,
- 2 pieces of other ID and one proof of address,
- 3 proofs of address.
Other ID includes:
- birth or adoption certificate,
- marriage or civil partner certificate,
- NHS card,
- DBS certificate,
- National Insurance number card.
Proof of address
To prove your address you can upload a:
- utility bill (such as gas, electricity, phone or internet),
- credit card statement,
- mortgage statement,
- letter from your support worker or head teacher,
- bank or building society statement,
- payslip with your address on it.
These items must be from the last 3 months.
You can also upload an:
- insurance certificate,
- council tax statement,
- UK court claim form or documentation issued by HM Court and Tribunal Services,
- P45 or P60,
- government document.
These items must be from the last 12 months.
If someone you live with is not a UK National
For each person in your household who is from outside the UK, you must also provide one of the following:
- passport,
- immigration status 'share code' from GOV.UK,
- refugee or sponsorship documentation,
- leave to remain letter,
- residency permit,
- proof of work, such as payslips from the last 3 months.
If a child (15 or younger) lives with you
For each child who will be living with you, you must upload both:
- their birth certificate,
- proof of child benefit or tax credits (like a letter or screenshot of child benefit payments).
3. Register online
Once you have all your information together you can register your household online.
We will let you know that your application has been registered or ask for more information within 2 weeks. You'll then be able to view and bid on homes.
